Ryan Gosling is one of the most successful movie stars in Hollywood. He first got thrust into the limelight as a child actor in The Mickey Mouse Club back in 1993. He then later starred in the Notebook, Half Nelson, Real Girl, Blue Valentine, and The Big Shot, just to mention a few. As a result, he’s been nominated for so many awards. While his journey to stardom is interesting to read, one of the most interesting stories about Ryan Gosling is the one about him missing a major movie role for being too big for it.
He’s famous partly for his great physique. However, there was a time when he actually let himself go so that he’d gain some pounds for the movie “The Lovely Bones.” Guess what, after doing all that, it was Mark Wahlberg who got the role instead. The reason, Ryan was then too big for the role.
You might be wondering how much weight he put on. Well, 60 pounds, that’s how much. How he gained this much weight is also quite an interesting tale. Turns out, every time Ryan felt thirsty, he drank melted ice cream. Some refreshing Haagen-Dazs to be specific.
Ice-cream is known to be very delicious but only makes one even more thirsty so you can only imagine how much of it Ryan would have especially on those very hot days. It wasn’t Ryan falling randomly into an unhealthy lifestyle, rather him demonstrating his love and respect for the craft, that’s acting. He was really just trying to connect with his character. He did this and grew a beard just so he’d look like a dad more.
So why did they give someone else this role? Well, they gave it to Wahlberg because while Gosling said the 60 pounds was in order for him to look more like what he felt his character should look like, this was allegedly done without proper communication the film’s co-writer during the pre-production phase. It was a great misunderstanding that not only left him overweight but also unemployed for some time because he couldn’t play some roles with that body for a while. Even funnier or more interesting though is that this wasn’t Ryan’s initial story. At first, he said on record that he was dropped because of his real age versus the character’s. At some point, it was even said that Ryan Gosling left because of creative differences and that they did not exactly let him go. With Mark, the film was shot and finished. Well, regardless, both Ryan Gosling and Mark Wahlberg went on to land major roles after what happened.
The story of Ryan gosling’s commitment to a given role remains very catchy and even inspiring. It’s basically worth it when looked at from a different angle. Ryan did manage to lose all the weight but this story will certainly be told for many more years to come, particularly to his new fans and to those people with a desire to get into acting.
